Still, you might wonder how they will affect your oral health. Will they cause dental sensitivity? This blog post explores what you should know.
Veneers and Sensitivity
First off, it is important to note that dental veneers are considered safe for oral health. No responsible dentist would not provide them if they posed any unacceptable risks!
However, the veneers process does usually require that a sliver of tooth enamel be removed. Usually, only about 0.5mm is removed, which is roughly the thickness of a fingernail or contact lens. Since enamel’s job is to protect the inner layers of the teeth, its removal can increase dental sensitivity.
The good news is that veneers replace the lost enamel, so there should be no permanent increase in sensitivity because of this treatment. The only sensitivity you experience should be temporary; it is likely to occur after your teeth are prepared for the veneers and possibly after the veneers are placed on your teeth.
How Long Will the Sensitivity Last?
People’s mouths react in different ways to the veneers process. For most people, any increase in sensitivity wears off within a few days to a few weeks. In the meantime, you can reduce discomfort by taking some practical steps:
- Avoid hot, cold, spicy, and acidic foods. Instead, eat a mild and soft diet.
- Use a non-abrasive, sensitivity-reducing toothpaste.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.
- Periodically rinse your mouth with warm salt water to soothe inflammation.
Once you get through the initial adjustment period with your veneers, they should feel very normal and natural in your mouth. In fact, they should feel very similar to real teeth!
If the sensitivity lasts longer than a few weeks, or you find that it is severe, contact your dentist. Your veneers may need to be slightly modified, or you might need other treatments to increase your comfort.
